Atonement Lutheran is a church of the Greater Milwaukee ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) Synod, located in Muskego, WI. Atonement is seeking a part-time Contemporary Music Leader (approx. 8-12 hrs/week) to lead a dynamic music ministry that enriches the faith life of our congregation through contemporary worship music. Involves fostering current vibrant music program, while growing and adapting it to meet changing worship needs, including online, as well as in-person.

Salary range for position varies from $15,000 to $23,000/year, to be commensurate with candidate’s experience, skills, and background. Position includes 4 weeks off paid per year.


1. Ensure high quality contemporary music in Sunday services and special services through ongoing planning, preparation, and execution.

  • Serve as the lead musician in the Contemporary Worship Team for all contemporary services. Coordinate guest musicians/singers when needed.
  • Encourage congregational song and participation. Teach new songs to congregation in a way that is engaging, inviting, and personable.
  • Direct the flow of worship in coordination with pastors and worship leaders.
  • Collaborate with the Communication Coordinator, Office Administrator, Audio Technician, and Audio-Visual volunteers, ensure the worship space, lighting, audio-visual systems, slides, printed material, etc. are ready for Contemporary services.

2. Lead the Contemporary Worship Team: Recruit, support, coordinate and schedule members for an optimal mix of vocal and instrumental gifts. Lead rehearsals and provide musical guidance to volunteers with and without formal musical training.

3. Foster a culture of inclusion, community, and worshipfulness amongst the Contemporary Worship Team and the church as a whole, especially to visitors and new members.

4. Maintain the music library for contemporary music (hard copy, electronic through software/licenses with related website, Planning Center, etc.)

5. Actively participate in Atonement’s Worship Committee, staff meetings (as appropriate), and other congregational teams for long-term, short-term, and event planning.

Qualifications and Abilities:

1. Demonstrated vocal skills and proficiency playing an instrument that supports congregational singing. Audition required.

2. Previous Contemporary Worship Team participation, ideally leadership in some capacity, strongly preferred.

3. Degree in music or equivalent area, or relevant music education, or equivalent degree is helpful, but not required.

4. Personality that demonstrates warmth, invitation, inclusion, encouragement, and excitement for loving God and living out a Christian life of service.

5. Compatibility and familiarity (+/or willingness to become familiar) with beliefs and worship practices of our congregation and denomination, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

6. Interpersonal skills and to effectively collaborate with pastors, other staff members and congregational leaders, and engage people of all ages and skill levels in the music ministry required.

7. Consistently able to meet the scheduling and time requirements of the position—including Sunday mornings for worship (approx. 8:30am – 12:00pm), one consistent weeknight per week for rehearsal, and other church obligations that arise. The hours of the position will fluctuate during certain times of the year (such as Lent/Easter/Christmas).
