Assistant Professor

The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) seeks qualified candidates to fill a full-time Assistant Professor position to teach in its First-Year Experience (FYE) program. Teaching at MIAD is learning-centered and student-focused. It requires a clear commitment to working closely with undergraduate art and design students and creating inclusive spaces of belonging, equity, critical discourse, and integrated learning. The college is looking for an outstanding educator who can prepare students to be innovative thinkers and practitioners of contemporary art and design. Candidates must embrace teaching first-year students and be actively engaged in their own studio practice.

This position will begin in the fall of 2023. Teaching duties are eighteen (18) credit hours of studio-based courses annually (9-credit load in the fall semester; 9-credit load in the spring semester) as well as academic advising and committee responsibilities. Salary will be determined by the candidate’s teaching and professional experience.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • MFA in Fine Art or Design.
  • Demonstrated commitment to effective teaching and integrated learning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of college‐level teaching in art and/or design.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach both Digital 2D and Digital 4D to First-Year Students.
  • Clear record of professional practice.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Teach 18 credits annually (9-credit load in the fall semester; 9-credit load in the spring semester)
  • Serve as an academic advisor and on committees as assigned.
  • Instruct in-person unless the course is assigned to be delivered virtually.
  • Serve as an invested member in the MIAD community, enhancing the life of the department, our students, campus, and broader Milwaukee community.

Preference may be given to candidates with the following:

  • Experience teaching college-level first-year students.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset related to emerging technology.
  • Experience mentoring a diverse student population.
  • Experience adapting pedagogy and curriculum to meet the needs of neurodivergent students.
  • Experience leading student groups or clubs.
