Director of Volunteer & AmeriCorps Programs

OBJECTIVE: Coordination of AmeriCorps and volunteer paraprofessional and peer counseling programs, including recruitment, training, supervision, coordination meetings and in-services, recognition, and compliance with state and agency regulations. Function as liaison, resource person, and representative; share responsibilities of emergency back-up coverage; and assist Executive Director in general supervision of the Teen Crisis & Runaway Program in the absence of the Program Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Recruitment: Recruit, interview, and select prospective back-up staff, paraprofessionals, AmeriCorps members, and Youth Program Assistant (YPA). Recruit peer counselors, and in the absence of the YPA, interview and select peer counselors. Develop and maintain connections with community and professional organizations, schools, and networks for the purposes of recruiting an adequate number of individuals representing diversity in race, gender, and economic status, among other areas. Conduct reference checks and maintain personnel files. Develop, design, and update applications, contracts, job descriptions, reference forms, and flyers and brochures for recruitment purposes.
  1. Training: Coordinate training and orientation of prospective back-up staff, paraprofessionals, AmeriCorps members, YPA, and peer counselors in order to ensure necessary skills. Schedule required certification courses for back-up staff and AmeriCorps members. Develop and update trainings and a policy and procedures manual for each position.
  1. Supervision: Coordinate scheduling of back-up staff, paraprofessionals, AmeriCorps members, YPA, and peer counselors. Provide overall supervision to paraprofessionals and peer counselors, and direct supervision to back-up staff, AmeriCorps members, YPA, and assigned paraprofessionals. In the absence of the Program Director and under the direction of the Executive Director, provide supervision to the YFSs. Evaluate back-up staff, YPA, and AmeriCorps members, and coordinate evaluation of paraprofessionals and peer counselors by YFSs. Administer surveys to back-up staff, YPA, paraprofessionals, and peer counselors for the purpose of improving position outcomes. Develop, design, and update self-evaluation forms, supervisor evaluation forms, and surveys. In accordance with the policies and procedures, and after consultation with the Program Director, write disciplinary letters to and terminate back-up staff, paraprofessionals, AmeriCorps members, YPA, and peer counselors when it is in the best interest of the program and clients.
  1. Program Coordination Meetings & In-Services: Provide regular program coordination meetings for back-up staff, paraprofessionals, and peer counselors for the purposes of addressing issues, providing support, ongoing training, and to ensure that pertinent program information is dispersed. Schedule regular in-services as a part of or separately from these meetings to provide ongoing training to back-up staff, paraprofessionals, AmeriCorps members, YPA, peer counselors, and other agency staff interested in attending. Record and share minutes from these meetings and in-services with applicable staff as needed.
  1. Recognition: Provide ongoing and informal recognition and appreciation of back-up staff, paraprofessionals, AmeriCorps members, YPA, and peer counselors. Chair committee to organize annual event to recognize the contributions of all volunteers of the agency.
  1. Consultation: Provide 24-hour phone or in-person consultation as needed in areas of intake assessment, crisis stabilization, and/or assistance with shelter care services.
  1. Coordination with Other Staff: Inform the Program Director of urgent situations, advise on needed program changes, and provide program updates. Consult with shelter staff on paraprofessional and peer counselor programs. Be available to address questions and concerns regarding volunteer supervision and the back-up, AmeriCorps, YPA, paraprofessional, and peer counselor programs, and provide support and feedback to all staff.
  1. Community Education & Relations: Serve as a liaison with community and professional organizations sharing and exchanging ideas, referrals, resources, and information. Respond to inquiries from prospective volunteer groups and facilitate volunteer groups’ engagement with agency programs as appropriate.
  1. State & Agency Regulations: Comply with state and agency regulations regarding back-up staff, paraprofessional, AmeriCorps, YPA, and peer counselor positions. Maintain personnel files for past and current back-up staff, AmeriCorps members, YPA, and volunteers that include required documents and records. Prepare monthly and quarterly reports on AmeriCorps, paraprofessional, and peer counselor programs.
  1. Staff Development: Actively participate in relevant agency staff development and training programs, and regularly attend applicable consultations and scheduled in-services.
  1. Other Duties: Working as an on-call staff member for shelter coverage as needed. Other duties may be assigned from time to time.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: City of Milwaukee residents are preferred. Bachelor’s level degree in social work, non-profit management, or similar major, plus program coordination and supervisory experience preferred; commitment to Walker’s Point Youth & Family Center’s mission and core values; open-minded about different cultures, beliefs, and identities; strong leadership and communication (oral and written) skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office and e-mail correspondence; access to car; valid Wisconsin driver’s license; proof and maintenance of auto insurance; completion of certifications, background and reference checks, and continuing education as required by state and agency regulations; and ability to climb stairs and some lifting.

Compensation Range: $23.00/per hour, 40 hours per week.
