About the Position

The Wisconsin Bike Fed seeks an Education Coordinator to be a key part of the Milwaukee area programs to promote pedestrian and bicycle safety. The Education Coordinator will work closely with the MilWALKee Walks Program Manager and the Statewide Adult Education Program Manager. This position will primarily focus on pedestrian education, with additional opportunities to provide bicycle education. They will act as a liaison between residents, community groups, and local government. The ideal candidate for this position is closely committed to and connected with their community, is a self-starter, and is interested in collaboration.

THIS IS A FEDERAL GRANT FUNDED POSITION: This project has been funded for 9 years, but funding for the position must be secured each year based on the state fiscal year calendar. We have secured funding for this position through the end of FY26 and will apply for continuation of funds in August of 2026.

Description:

This position will be focused 90% on MilWALKee Walks programming, and approximately 10% on adult bicycle and pedestrian classes throughout Southeast Wisconsin.

(90%) MilWALKee Walks is a program of the Wisconsin Bike Fed that promotes pedestrian rights and safety in Milwaukee County. MilWALKee Walks supports local education efforts and leaders and hosts special events to raise the profile of walking for community vibrancy and safety. We believe that EVERYONE in Milwaukee County deserves to feel safe while walking, biking, driving, or using public transportation. This will be achieved by hosting community crosswalk demonstrations that attract media attention and educate the public about the laws that require yielding to pedestrians, focused educational pedestrian safety workshops, connecting residents with resources that inspire safe and healthy streets, and assisting with neighborhood and city-wide pedestrian safety focused plans.

Core responsibilities:

  • Recruit volunteers to assist in efforts such as data collection, crosswalk actions, general outreach, training, etc.
  • Plan and host outreach events such as crosswalk actions, walk audits, and other ways to engage with the community around pedestrian safety.
  • Develop engagement and outreach materials that are culturally relevant.
  • Provide support and education for communities impacted by crashes involving pedestrians.
  • Keep detailed and accurate record of expenses and time, including assisting the Program Managers to ensure that grant deliverables are met.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Program Manager(s) with media pieces (e.g. press releases, e-newsletters, blogs) and participate in public speaking engagements related to pedestrian safety (e.g. local news).
  • Engage in training identified by the Program Manager(s), and identify potential additional professional development and training as needed.
  • Collaborate with other local colleagues and organizations to bring the message of pedestrian safety to communities.

(10%) The Education Coordinator will work with the Statewide Adult Education Program Manager to provide support for the planning and execution of adult education classes held in southeast Wisconsin. These efforts may include:

  • Work virtually and in-person at locations across Milwaukee, Sheboygan, Racine, and Kenosha Counties
  • Assist with Walk audits in communities in SE Wisconsin
  • Assist with promotion of adult classes and registration of participants.
  • Assist and teach adult classes as needed.
  • Assist with other projects and tasks as needed.
  • Complete the online portion of the League of American Bicyclists’ Smart Cycling course.

Qualifications (Required):

  • Must share a passion for Wisconsin Bike Fed mission and vision
  • Some education or experience in community organizing, working with volunteers, and/or transportation advocacy
  • Commitment to working in cross-generational, multicultural, and inclusive settings
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, strong oral and written communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills: Google Suite (Google Docs, Sheets, Gmail, etc.)
  • Ability to balance competing priorities and deadlines and to handle multiple tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
  • Experience bicycle riding for both recreation and transportation
  • Multi-modal transportation habits

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish (any bilingual abilities is a plus)
  • Experience in community engagement, project management, or government relations.
  • Competency in graphic design and/or social media (Facebook, Instagram, and video).
  • Resident of the Milwaukee area, or an area with similar demographics, social and economic challenges.

Job Conditions/Work Location:

Currently WBF is in a hybrid work model with some days in the office required each week, as well as some flexibility to balance working from home and out in the community.

Physical Requirements: Sitting for prolonged periods, typing on a computer keyboard, the ability to walk or use a mobility device for up to one hour, lifting objects of 30 pounds or less. The candidate must be able to independently transport themselves to job sites with necessary materials, via personal vehicle, bicycle, transit, rideshare/taxi, etc. A driver’s license is required, a personal vehicle is not required. We would be happy to speak with candidates regarding accommodations.

Work Schedule: This position works regular business hours (9-5, Monday-Friday) as well as some weekends and evenings. Some travel required across Milwaukee County, with occasional travel to Sheboygan, Racine, and Kenosha Counties. Some optional travel in the state and country is possible to attend conferences.

Compensation: This position is a full time salaried position. Located in Milwaukee, WI. A hybrid work site mixed between our headquarters office, work from home, and in schools/onsite in SE Wisconsin. Salary range of $47,000-$49,000. Benefits include health and dental insurance, PTO and paid holidays available upon start date. Simple IRA matching is available after a review period.
