Reports to: Camp Director
Compensation: $750/week (June 22 – July 24) – Includes room & board
General Summary: This position is responsible for the overall health and safety of campers and staff. This includes being responsible for distribution of medications, managing any injuries/illnesses, and being first responder to any medical emergencies on camp. This position provides daily health, safety, and cleanliness checks throughout the camp.
Job Responsibilities:
Essential Functions:
- Review and follow American Camp Associations (ACA), federal, state, local or agency guidelines for the camp’s overall health care.
- Train, provide support, and ensure high standards of health and safety in daily living so that each staff and counselor will:
- Oversee the daily care of each camper within his/her/there supervision including recognition of personal, physical, and mental health needs;
- Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed;
- Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and alert supervisor and/or camp director; and
- Be alert of health and safety throughout camp and report any needs to appropriate personnel.
- Provide health care to meet individual needs of campers and camp staff.
- Collaborate with camp staff/directors to meet health needs.
- Follow health care policies/procedures as described in the Healthcare Manual and treatment procedures.
- Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.
- Maintain the camp Health Center in a neat and orderly manner. Including maintaining appropriate inventory of all necessary medical supplies and equipment.
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to state and American Camp Association Standards.
- Ensure staff and campers health examinations are current and on file.
- Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.
- Prepare and record accident reports forms for COA records and insurance purposes.
- Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies
- Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, waterfront and activity areas.
- Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed.
- Screen all campers and staff who are arriving and departing camp.
- Verify health history and examinations.
- Verify emergency authorizations.
- Identify any observable evidence of illness and/or communicable diseases.
- Conduct a health assessment.
- Keep all medications used by campers and staff.
- Supervise sanitary conditions throughout the camp.
- Observe daily cleanliness in the food service facility and other areas throughout the camp.
- Report any health problems and/or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director.
Other Job Duties:
- Perform any tasks beyond those assigned as help is needed.
- Provide leadership in the camp’s risk management program.
- Be knowledgeable of outside health resources
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field
- Medication distribution certification
- Must hold current certification and/or WI Licensure as an Emergency Responder, EMT, Paramedic, RN, MED or equivalent
- Current First Aid, CPR, AED certification

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:
The physical requirements for this position are:
- Physical ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and facilities and camper and staff behavior.
- Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing/walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more).
- Must be able to handle exposure to heat and chemicals from ovens, stoves, dishwasher, etc.
- Ability to provide first aid and to assist campers and staff in an emergency.
The work environment is an outdoor camp environment. This means that the person will spend much time out-of-doors which can mean exposure to extreme hot and cold weather. It also involves various activities with youth and families requiring the ability to respond quickly to changing situations. This position requires evening and weekend work on a regular basis. Due to summer camp, this person will have extremely limited time off while camp is in session.
