Position Summary
As the Controller, you will serve as the top accounting executive, collaborating closely with the CEO, COO, and executive leadership to uphold the highest standards of fiscal oversight and customer service across all facets of network operations. You will act as a strategic partner, moving beyond daily transactional accounting to establish robust internal controls, streamline financial systems, and guide the financial health of both our administrative network and our social justice subsidiaries. This role requires strong, transparent, high-integrity leadership to oversee the accounting department and ensure the financial integrity of the organization as we continue to scale.
Strategic Leadership & Management
- Oversee the comprehensive operations of the accounting department, ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll.
- Recruit, train, evaluate, and manage the accounting department staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
- Partner with the executive team to drive new customer development and the strategic growth of our accounting services business.
- Prepare fiscal analyses, forecasts, and projections for the CEO/COO to inform high-level organizational strategy.
- Deliver clear, comprehensive financial presentations to the Board of Trustees.
Financial Operations & Reporting
- Direct all general ledger entry, preparation, and maintenance.
- Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of monthly financial statements.
- Monitor daily cash status and manage cash flow projections.
- Oversee the strict reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts.
- Prepare and submit monthly cost reports and invoices to funders and external network customers.
- Assist in the preparation and management of the annual organizational budget.
Compliance, Controls, & Auditing
- Establish, monitor, and enforce internal accounting controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure financial compliance.
- Review and ensure the accurate submission of payroll, applying all payroll standards required by state and federal law.
- Act as the primary liaison for independent auditors, preparing year-end audit schedules and ensuring a seamless external audit process.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support network objectives.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration. (CPA or CMA designation highly preferred).
- Experience: 5-8+ years of progressively responsible related experience, with a strong preference for candidates with established experience in nonprofit accounting and grant compliance.
- Leadership: Proven track record of managing and developing accounting staff.
- Technical Proficiency: High competency in the use of Excel and advanced financial software/ERP systems.
- Communication: Exceptional organizational skills, detail-oriented, and the ability to seamlessly multitask. Good oral and written communication skills are essential.
- Problem Solving: Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in bringing people together to solve complex financial and operational problems.
