Milwaukee Community Crossroads cultivates a vibrant Milwaukee community by helping individuals, families, and neighborhoods access basic needs, overcome barriers, and connect opportunities.

In partnership with the leadership team, the Director of Development and Communications implements a vision, strategy and annual plan for resource development that supports the mission of building strong neighborhoods full of opportunity. This person must be a proven leader who is responsible for creating and executing an annual fund development plan which includes, but is not limited to, relationship management with a portfolio of current and prospective individual, corporate and foundation donors; developing grant proposals and reports; special event management; database management; and coordination of the organization’s marketing and communications efforts. The role emphasizes relationship building, impactful written communication, and strong organization of strategies and deadlines.

Reports to: Executive Director

Schedule: Full-time, exempt position; occasional weekend and evening commitments

Pay Rate: $70,000-85,000/annually, based on experience

Benefits: Health, vision and dental insurance, pre-tax flexible spending account, 403(b) defined contribution retirement plan with 3% match, generous paid time off package starting at 40 days per year for full-time employees and 12 paid holidays, phone/technology stipend for eligible positions.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  1. Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of 125 – 150 current and potential donors.
  2. Oversight of the donor database (eTapestry) and acknowledgement process.
  3. Lead a comprehensive grants management program including, but not limited to, developing grant proposals and reports; relationship management with program officers; manage grants calendar; and relationship management with program officers.
  4. Research and identify public and private funding resources available to the organization, working with all program staff to clarify focus and appropriateness of the funding for programs.
  5. Assist the Executive Director in coordinating Board’s fund development efforts.
  6. Create and coordinate delivery of donor appeals, including annual, planned giving, and targeted appeals.
  7. Coordinate fund development events, including securing sponsorships, managing invites, event logistics and analysis of event effectiveness.
  8. Plan and implement organizational marketing and communications strategies.
  9. Prepare monthly fund development report for Executive Director, Board of Directors and Development Committee.
  10. Support organizational management and continuous improvement efforts by serving as part of Director’s group.

Qualifications Desired Include:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field, Master’s Degree a plus
  2. Ideal candidate brings tenacity, critical thinking and the ability to connect prospective supporters with the organization’s mission.
  3. Strong communication skills with previous experience preparing grant proposals
  4. Ability to build and maintain strong relationships
  5. Highly organized, able to manage multiple projects.
  6. Able to collaborate with diverse team of community members, supporters, board members, partners, staff and volunteers.
  7. Passion for the organization’s mission and commitment to housing, community building youth development, older adult, and food security programming and Milwaukee’s neighborhoods.
  8. Knowledge and comfort working with diverse funding sources that include local foundations; corporations, community partners, individual donors, Department of Labor, HUD, other federal funding sources; and Milwaukee Public Schools;
  9. Excellent technology skills including use of Microsoft Office, fundraising software, Mailchimp, Google Suite, workflow tools and other software/platforms.
  10. Knowledge of the Give Smart platform a plus

What began with American Baptist roots providing outreach to immigrants in 1921, MCC now primarily serves low-income people in the most historically underserved neighborhoods including focuses on older adults, young adults, families.

The Director of Development and Communications’s office is located within Milwaukee Community Crossroads’s main site, working alongside programming and community members. The position includes travel to MCC program sites throughout Milwaukee County.
