Ex Fabula, which is Latin for “from stories”, is a nonprofit that connects Milwaukee through real stories. Our vision is a radically inclusive community that honors the dignity of all people, so we leverage personal stories to help community members grow, connect, and heal. Our programs include a season of public StorySlams and workshops, projects that amplify underrepresented voices and stories (Brave Space, Deaf Stories Project, Youth Affinity Storytelling, Equal Access), collaborations with schools, businesses and nonprofits, and the award-winning radio show/podcast, Real Stories MKE.
We are seeking a facilitator and project manager to advance our mission by planning and implementing Ex Fabula storytelling events as our programming coordinator. Our small but mighty team works partly from home and partly at Fruition Café and Coworking Space on 27th and Wells. The schedule is variable with some evenings and weekends required; weekly in-person meetings will take place during regular business hours (9 am to 5 pm, M-F).
Essential Responsibilities:
- Serve as Stage Manager to produce approximately 20 StorySlams and 95 storytelling workshops annually.
- Visit partners and venues and communicate with them regarding event planning and logistics.
- Schedule and communicate with contractors (primarily teaching artists, aka storytelling coaches).
- Coordinate storyteller selection and preparation (workshops, one-on-one coaching) for curated events.
- Serve as either a lead coach or assistant coach for 10-25 workshops annually.
- Communicate with other staff (Marketing, Admin/Volunteer Coordinator) about marketing, materials, volunteer, and data entry needs.
- Manage budgets, contractor invoices, and prepare materials for all events.
- Follow existing processes to implement events and programs with the ability to expand and improve on them over time.
- Evaluate programs to ensure they are achieving their goals.
- Work with Ex Fabula staff and partners to design customized programming that will achieve those goals – and then implement it
- Collect and analyze event data (numbers, contact information, story descriptions, and surveys).
- Share data with collaborators and use it to continually improve Ex Fabula programs and processes.
- Leverage your enthusiasm and network in order to engage more individuals and organizations in Ex Fabula programming.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and access; ability to work well within diverse communities, including the ability to foster brave spaces and interrupt harm.
- 2+ years of experience in coordinating event or programming logistics, preferably working on many events or programs at a time.
- Experience customizing events/programming for groups of different ages, identities, abilities, and backgrounds.
- Ability to translate Scope of Work / Event Brief / similar documents into individual tasks and deadlines, determine owners, and track progress, and ensure that all necessary tasks are executed before, during, and after an event.
- Ability to collaborate with individuals and organizations on programming, including partners with limited logistics expertise.
- Ability to anticipate problems and proactively troubleshoot during planning and implementation.
- Reliable transportation to event locations around Milwaukee County.
- 21+ to ensure access to all event locations.
