The African American Roundtable is seeking a passionate and self-motivated Youth Organizer to join our team. The Youth Organizer will play a critical role in building campaigns and programs to support the mission of AART to address the needs of youth in Milwaukee. The ideal candidate will be personable, have a strong commitment to social justice, and be able to develop relationships with young people and community organizations. This full-time position requires a willingness to learn from young people, strong relationship-building skills, and the ability to implement best practices for youth engagement. This person will report to the Community Program Manager.

START DATE FOR POSITION: ASAP UNTIL POSITION IS FILLED.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Building campaigns and programs to support the mission of AART and the needs of youth in Milwaukee after year one
  • Embedding AART’s values throughout our youth engagement programming, events, projects, communication, retreats, and political education spaces
  • Providing trainings for one-on-one conversations and managing projects, etc. and coaching that supports skill building for youth council and participants
  • Learning and practicing AART’s abolition culture and politic
  • Researching and learning the historical youth work in Milwaukee
  • Developing and implementing best practices for youth engagement
  • Working with supervisor and youth council to set and track goals aligned with AART’s organizational goals
  • Bringing our most engaged youth participants onto the youth council through events and one-on-one organizing conversations
  • Helping to support young people by bringing in other young people (relational organizing)
  • Ensuring young people and their leadership are part of AART’s digital, community safety building, and membership efforts
  • Building relationships that build trust

QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

  • Commitment and passion for AART’s mission of social, racial, and economic justice
  • 1-2 years of youth engagement work
  • Empathetic good listener with a willingness to learn from young people
  • Inclusive leadership that inspires and motivates others to take action and meet goals, while practicing skills taught
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge and skills with Google Suites and Zoom
  • Ability to meet deadlines, manage projects and workflow both independently and collaboratively
  • Commitment to learning and development of self that promotes internal and external growth
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Basic time management skills
  • Attentive to details
  • Sees the dignity in all Black people
  • Experience with cultural organizing
  • Currently lives in Milwaukee or has a lived experience in Milwaukee
  • Available to work flexible hours, including occasional evening and weekend events

SALARY AND BENEFITS: 

The African American Roundtable is a project of the Hmong American Women’s Association (HAWA). Base salary for this position is $46,000 – $51,000 per year, and experience and aptitude will be taken into consideration for negotiating salary.  We provide an employee benefits package including policies and services that support the employees’ mental and physical well-being, financial security, and family needs. We also offer mileage and expense reimbursement for required travel, and a partial cell phone reimbursement.
