Job Title: Lead Artist Assistant for Graphic Design + Mental Health Advocacy Program

Reports To: Lead artist, program manager

Direct Reports: High school interns

Status: Part-time staff, 10 hours per week


  • Beginning in July or August 2024
  • Wednesdays 5-7pm (virtual)
  • Saturdays 8:30am-2pm (in person)
  • 30 minute weekly meeting with Lead Artist (virtual)

ArtWorks for Milwaukee’s mission is preparing youth for tomorrow by providing transferable career skills through art internships today. ArtWorks’ paid internships provide high school students with mentorship from professional artists, creative collaborative projects, engagement with community issues, and exposure to workforce skills.

Lead artist assistants play a critical role in the overall success of ArtWorks’ programs by supporting the lead artist in facilitation, execution, evaluation, and documentation of  program activities. Programs run one year, combining art-making and professional development.

This program will focus on two primary themes: graphic design, and mental health advocacy. The ArtWorks interns will work with the lead artist to create public art projects and “client” projects based on this theme, including flyers, posters, logos, and advertisements. Sessions will integrate community engagement activities and discussions about mental health issues and experiences.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet with lead artist to prepare program session agendas and debrief after program sessions
  • Develop and facilitate program activities, if requested by lead artist
  • Document program sessions through photos, videos, and note-taking
  • Assist lead artist in managing art supplies
  • Work with lead artist and interns to make connections with community members
  • Brainstorm on ways to inform the public about mental health issues through community art
  • Participate in community engagement activities, such as therapeutic arts workshops or facilitated group discussions
  • Adhere to policies and guidelines of ArtWorks and program site, including ArtWorks’ safety protocols
  • Other duties as assigned by lead artist and/or program manager

  • Interest in social justice and social change initiatives
  • Interest in mental health advocacy
  • Skilled in digital arts (adobe suite)


Starting at $17.00 per hour
