Job Summary:
The Cathedral Center is an agency serving women and families with children experiencing homelessness and housing crises. Services are offered in two locations in the downtown Milwaukee area. The custodial associate is responsible for assisting in maintaining a safe and clean physical environment at our Friendship House location. The custodial associate is responsible for day-to-day cleaning of all three floors of the building, as well as minor maintenance and building organization. This is a part-time, hourly position which reports directly to the Operations Manager with an opportunity to work full-time with added responsibility.
All staff and volunteers at Cathedral Center are expected to communicate professionally and respectfully with vendors, guests, partners, donors, and co-workers. This job is fast paced, and no two days are alike.
All Cathedral Center staff are expected to follow the COVID-19 policies put in place including testing and wearing a mask on shift, when required.
Essential Functions
- Perform routine custodial and housekeeping duties throughout a multi-level facility (three floors, no elevator), including sweeping, vacuuming, mopping floors, and cleaning restrooms, kitchens, and common areas, which requires frequent use of stairs.
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly environment, including disinfecting high-touch surfaces and ensuring bathrooms and eating areas meet health and safety standards.
- Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash and recyclables from all areas of the building.
- Maintain safe access to the facility, including performing snow and ice removal and applying salt or ice melt during winter conditions, as needed to ensure resident and staff safety.
- Monitor facility conditions; identify, document, and report maintenance or repair needs; and complete minor repairs as assigned.
- Contribute to a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for residents, including individuals from vulnerable populations.
- Communicate effectively in spoken English with residents, co-workers, and partners, including understanding and responding to basic questions and providing simple directions as needed for safety and daily operations.
- Maintain professional, respectful, and appropriate interactions with staff, partner agencies, volunteers, and residents.
- Safely perform the physical requirements of the position, including standing and walking for extended periods, frequent stair use, and moving items weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Marginal (Non-Essential) Functions
- Perform minor maintenance or repair tasks that are not central to custodial responsibilities.
- Assist with occasional or project-based cleaning beyond routine duties.
- Support staff, partner agencies, or volunteers with facility-related needs as appropriate.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience in basic cleaning or housekeeping.
- Ability to stand, walk, ascend and descend stairs, lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to maintain appropriate and healthy boundaries with co-workers and clients.
- Proficient in reading and writing in English; high school (or equivalent) completion preferred.
- Familiarity with basic repairs and routine maintenance of equipment preferred.
This position is open to all qualified internal and external candidates. Internal candidates must have reached six months of continuous employment at the time of application. Candidates must be able to sit, stand, stoop, and walk for extended periods of time and be able to lift fifty pounds. All staff at the Cathedral Center are expected to work effectively both independently and in a team environment and to become familiar with and utilize a trauma-informed approach. All candidates for paid and volunteer positions at The Cathedral Center must be willing to have a background check conducted.
