Summary
This position maintains a safe and secure environment for visitors and staff. This is a full-time position, and eligible for benefits.
Main Job Responsibilities
Safety & Security
Goal: create a positive impression while enforcing safety protocols
- Greet everyone that enters and provide accurate information and answer questions about COA and our programs.
- Enforce the metal detector policy in compliance with legal requirements (if applicable).
- Ensure program participants are checked in and recorded.
- Determine a visitor’s destination/reason for entering:
- Ensure visitors sign the visitor’s log and receive a visitor pass.
- Inform violators of site policy and procedures. Be prepared to expel violators.
- Proactively maintain ongoing communication with program staff to ensure smooth running of programs.
- Maintain security desk area including general cleanliness, supply inventory, and up-to-date program forms and information.
Goal: be alert and prepared to report and intervene in extraordinary activity in and around the building and grounds
- Breaches of security: open doors, unauthorized people in the building, carrying forbidden articles, persons engaging in suspicious, unsafe, or criminal acts, etc.
- Loitering, unusual gathering or movement of students/participants,
- Situations that could represent danger such as burned-out lighting, wet floors, missing fire extinguishers, etc.
- Crowd control and maintaining order.
- Sound alarm and/or call police or fire department by telephone in case of fire, presence of unauthorized persons, criminal activity, etc. Interview witnesses following documentation procedures.
- Be knowledgeable of and actively involved in the building’s emergency plans such as fire evacuation and other crisis situations. Render first aid within the limits and skills of training.
Patrols are on a regular interval. Examine doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure. Monitor and report irregularities such as fire hazards, property damage, unusual occurrences, and security doors left unlocked.

Manage youth behavior through positive reinforcement, redirection, and progressive discipline.
Role model appropriate behavior at all times. This includes developing and maintaining appropriate professional relationships with youth, colleagues, parents, facilitators, community members, etc.
Participate in professional development to meet continuing education requirements.
Provide support, as needed, to Program Staff.
Qualifications
Education/Knowledge/Experience
- High School Diploma/GED
- Minimum of one-year experience working in a similar role or in a role with transferrable skills
- Minimum of 25 years of age

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions
The physical requirements are
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
- Must be able to move quickly/run and use both arms and hands
The work environment is a community center and school environment with urban youth and families in a variety of settings. This requires the ability to respond quickly to changing situations and be able to move around the COA site as needed. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
