Additionally, provide English coverage in our academic help center, ALPHA, and be available to supervise the Book Club (a student-run club; no prepping required, meets once in December). ALPHA and the Book Club require no prepping, grading, or outside work. From January 4 through mid-February (second semester), teach 2 sections of College Prep English II and cover ALPHA one period. Book Club will meet 4 times.

  • The class periods are: 1st, 2nd, 3rd (ALPHA).

A strong candidate for this position would have experience teaching analytical writing and would emphasize critical thinking as the foundation for writing. The English Department is highly collaborative, especially in the freshman and sophomore levels, where teachers are aligned in course pacing, sequence of units, common final exams, common topic options for writing assignments and common oral presentation rubrics. Across all courses/grade levels, grading practices are discussed to ensure department faculty members evaluate student writing within a similar framework, with similar expectations. Check out the English Department’s philosophy and course offerings at www.dsha.info/page/academics/curriculum/english.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach sections of English, provide coverage in ALPHA, and provide Book Club coverage.
  • Collaborate closely with English Department members and get help as often as needed.
  • Working from the teacher’s substitute plans, implement lessons, grade work as needed, and meet with the Department Chair and other members to implement any additional assessments as needed (e.g., reading check quizzes, student presentations, etc.)
  • Create a positive, supportive classroom environment.
  • Commit to helping all students, regardless of their background, prior preparation or skill level, grow in writing, reading, critical thinking and speaking.

Qualifications:

Position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in English or an appropriate subject area and high school teaching experience. Highly effective communication skills, strong organizational skills, and a strong desire to assist all students to be successful are also required.
