Job Summary:

Under general supervision performs varied grounds, custodial and general maintenance duties; and performs related work as required.

Salary Range:

Approx. $17-$20/hour based on experience.

Responsibilities:

All tasks are performed on a weekly basis, unless otherwise noted:

  1. Cuts and edges lawn by operating power and hand equipment/tools.
  2. Weeds landscape by hand or by operating hand tools. Areas include beds located near 100 Street, reader board, east side parking island, gym foyer, perennial bed, west gym doors, and employee parking lot (west and north side of building).
  3. Waters various grounds areas by hand or by operating the sprinkler system, especially the planting at gym entrance and on east side of building. Depending on the conditions, may need to be watered more often.
  4. Drags softball field to remove weeds and lines the softball diamond.
  5. On a daily basis picks up paper and/or debris on school property and in assigned areas for sweeping/vacuuming.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned, including washing windows and other maintenance duties.
  7. Demonstrate a willingness to support the mission of the school.
  8. Promote team spirit among facilities and grounds staff and Total School Community (TSC).
  9. Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

Individuals possessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above are considered to possess the necessary education. Must be 18 years or older to operate a power mower.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Proper methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in assigned tasks.
  • Basic requirements for the safe maintenance of school facilities/grounds.
  • Good work habits.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:

  • Operate riding and hand lawn mowers.
  • Operate power edging equipment.
  • Use cleaning materials, equipment, and methods according to predetermined standards.
  • Quickly learn and apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures, and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work.
  • Maintain tools and equipment assigned in clean working order providing proper security.
  • Perform minor, non-technical repairs.
  • Perform moderately heavy manual labor.
  • Observe and report needs for maintenance and repair.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Be flexible with days and times to maximize the weather conditions conducive to groundskeeping.
  • Work in extreme hot and cold temperatures.
  • Perform simple and repetitive tasks.

Protective Clothing Required:

No protective clothing or accessories is required on a regular basis; however, frequently, safety glasses and ear plugs are required depending on tasks. Uniforms may be required.

  3. Work environment involves exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  4. Must possess vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  5. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; and talk; or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, including above shoulders; climb or balance; and stoop or bend; kneel; crouch; or crawl.

Work Environment:

The work takes place primarily outside where there is exposure to machinery and outside elements/weather, including potential for extreme hot or cold conditions, with moderate noise.

Ability to meet a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends and available on-call for emergencies by telephone and/or cell phone.
