The Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) is seeking a dedicated and experienced Facilities and Field Services Coordinator to ensure the proper maintenance and functionality of our shelter grounds, equipment, and essential mechanical systems. This hands-on role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, enjoys problem-solving, and values animal welfare.
This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing equipment, overseeing building operations, supporting staff and volunteers, and participating in the broader mission of HAWS, including public-facing services and animal care support.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform preventative and routine maintenance of HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, vehicles, crematorium, and grounds across HAWS sites.
- Coordinate equipment upkeep at both the main shelter and Schallock Center for Animals (SCA), collaborating with the Facilities & Grounds Assistant.
- Act as the primary contact for facility vendors (janitorial, supplies, equipment servicing) and manage ordering for shelter supplies.
- Communicate regularly with the Assistant Director and SCA staff regarding facility needs, maintenance issues, and schedules.
- Maintain a detailed inventory of equipment for both HAWS locations and assist in developing maintenance schedules and replacement plans.
- Serve as the lead staff contact for facilities-related volunteers and work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator.
- Provide public euthanasia services as part of HAWS’ community offerings.
- Support kennel and adoption teams as needed.
- Assist the Assistant Director with workers’ compensation and volunteer injury claims.
- Participate in the preparation and monitoring of the annual facilities and field services budget.
- Respond to animal rescues and participate in disaster preparedness and response when necessary.
- Uphold HAWS’ standards of excellent customer service, maintaining a helpful, courteous, and compassionate presence with the public, volunteers, and team members.
- Continuously pursue opportunities for improvement and professional growth.
- Additional duties and projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; relevant experience in facilities maintenance preferred.
- Supervisory or leadership experience is a plus.
- Experience working with animals and understanding animal care and behavior.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with diverse teams.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and general computer skills.
- The ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks, including bending, climbing, walking, and operating tools and machinery.
- Comfortable working in noisy, high-pressure environments.
- Working knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry).
- Experience using and maintaining landscaping and snow removal equipment.
- Must be at least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and make decisions that consider both animal and public safety.
- Must pass a criminal background check.
- Personal vehicle insurance required.
Schedule
This full time position requires on-site presence, 5 days a week, including one weekend day to ensure the proper care and safety of sheltering animals and facilities. Evening, or emergency response availability may be required.
