Kinship Community Food Center is seeking an individual to help train the next generation of culinary leaders in Milwaukee. The Café Manager will lead daily operations at the city’s newest healthy eatery in the heart of Bronzeville.

Kinship Community Food Center engages volunteers and neighborhood residents to end hunger, isolation, and poverty.  The mission pillars of our work are 1) nourishing food security and wellness, 2) fostering kinship and community engagement and 3) creating stability & economic opportunity. Our fresh food market, urban farm, and collaborative meals expand food access while teaching healthful habits and skills in a community of belonging where crisis assistance and mentoring is made available. We believe no one is so deprived that they have nothing to give, and no one is so well-off that they no longer have needs.

Position Responsibilities 

  • Oversee café opening and closing Monday through Friday, tentatively 6:30am-3:00pm
  • Supervise 4-6 hourly café workers during all operating hours
  • Train new employees on café operations, including but not limited to drink preparation, food preparation and service, and point of sale system usage
  • Monitor and maintain inventory, coordinating with vendors to order food dry goods supplies
  • Mentor staff in areas of customer service and conflict management
  • Maintain daily, weekly, and monthly records of sales figures and expenses with the assistance of Kinship’s Controller
  • Monitor menu items to ensure successful sales numbers, pricing, and profitability, and adjust offerings accordingly
  • Ensure food prep, kitchen, beverage, and café areas remain clean, tidy, and sanitary
  • Act as team lead on any caterings booked by the café, stepping in to complete caterings individually when necessary
  • Work closely with Workforce Development Manager and other Kinship Workforce Development Staff to ensure the success of the trainee program and the Kinship Café (this includes navigating individual trainee’s personal development plans, trainee schedules, finding coverage for shifts when necessary, identifying potential new café candidates, etc.)
  • Work closely with customers to answer questions and listen to complaints regarding food quality and customer service before working to resolve those complaints promptly
  • Add new menu items and seasonal specials, when appropriate, to keep menu offerings fresh and product inventory streamlined
  • Act as a front-facing community ambassador for Kinship

Desired Qualifications

  • Receptiveness to overall servant leader model and mission of Kinship Community Food Center
  • Experience and enthusiasm working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Working knowledge of trauma informed care and strength-based principles
  • 3+ years of work experience in café/restaurant management, ownership, or related field
  • High-school or general-equivalency diploma (preferred), related experience may be considered in lieu of education
  • Serv Safe Food Manager Certificate (or willingness to obtain this before starting the position)
  • Proven management skills with exemplary organizational, time management, communication, and customer service skills
  • Highly motivated, self-directed with a positive attitude and the ability to work a flexible schedule when necessary, including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Demonstrated organizational, collaborative, interpersonal, and written & verbal communication skills 
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to set priorities and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Microsoft Office experience (preferred), willing to train
  • Willingness to learn and try new things
  • Openness to work within a Christian/Catholic faith-based environment based on social justice principles
  • Valid Driver’s License, proof of insurance, and transportation to support work activities and clean driving record to be able to be added to Kinship’s insurance policy.

A competitive salary of $45,000 – $55,000 (commensurate with experience), benefits package, a flexible work environment, an enthusiastic team of dedicated staff and volunteers.

Working Conditions:

Work Location: Fast casual café in a prominent location proximate to downtown Milwaukee

Physical Requirements: Standing for prolonged periods. Typing on a computer keyboard. Lifting objects of 40 pounds or greater. Ability to operate commercial kitchen appliances and equipment, a hand cart, and a cargo van.
