Position Overview
The Volunteer and Communications Coordinator will play a key role in strengthening Milwaukee Diaper Mission’s community engagement and visibility. This team member will be responsible for leading volunteer experiences, cultivating long-term relationships with volunteers and supply drive organizers, supporting our digital communications, and contributing to our fund development efforts through thoughtful stewardship and engagement. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about connecting with people, excels at organization and follow-through, and understands how meaningful engagement leads to deeper investment in our mission.
Key Responsibilities
Volunteer Coordination, Cultivation and Stewardship (55%)
- Coordinate volunteer communications and scheduling for individuals and groups, using volunteer management software to create shift opportunities and manage sign-ups efficiently.
- Lead volunteers in tasks such as wrapping diapers, assembling period kits, and partner agency order fulfillment—ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and an excellent experience for all.
- Maintain accurate volunteer records and report engagement metrics to the team regularly.
- Provide responsive, friendly communication to individuals organizing supply drives—facilitating drop-offs and following up with stewardship touchpoints.
- Develop and implement a stewardship plan for volunteers and supply drive supporters, including thank-you communications, recognition efforts, and opportunities for continued involvement.
- Collaborate with the development team to identify and support opportunities to move volunteers and community supporters into deeper engagement, including donations, peer fundraising, and recurring support.
- Assist with giving tours of the facility to volunteers, partners, and community members.
Marketing and Communications (35%)
- Support MDM’s visibility and engagement by managing the social media and email calendar, aligning messaging with overall communications, advocacy, and fundraising strategies.
- Create and schedule compelling, mission-driven content for social media and email newsletters.
- Monitor social media and email engagement and report back to the team on results.
- Collaborate with team members to gather stories, photos, and updates that resonate with our audience.
- Represent MDM at resource fairs and community events to raise awareness with potential donors, volunteers, and/or partner organizations.
Administrative Support – 10%
- Assist with donor database management by entering new contacts, updating records, and helping process and acknowledge gifts to ensure consistent donor stewardship.
- Manage the organization’s public inbox, providing timely responses and routing inquiries as appropriate.
- Support warehouse organization and inventory, including the use of a pallet jack.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Experience
- Minimum 1-2 years working in a non-profit setting, preferably volunteer coordinator, fund development coordinator, social media coordinator, or similar position.
- Strong customer service and public speaking skills with the ability to confidently lead groups of 20+ volunteers, give engaging tours, and clearly explain volunteer tasks (e.g. diaper wrapping, period kit assembly)
- At least 1 year of data entry experience, with comfort using Microsoft Office, Google Drive, volunteer management software, and CRM database – Network for Good a plus
- Proficiency in social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Meta Business Suite) and experience creating content in Canva preferred
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to learn new systems and processes
- Ability to manage conflict and navigate challenging conversations with compassion and professionalism
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced, creative team environment while also working independently
- Willingness to contribute to a positive team culture that values collaboration, inclusion, and care for our community.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 40 pounds and stand or walk for extended periods of time
- Willingness to operate a manual and/or electric pallet jack (we will pay for your training and certification—don’t let this discourage you from applying!)
- Access to reliable transportation
- High school diploma or equivalent required. College degree (Associates or higher) preferred.
Schedule & Start Date
- Full-time employees have the potential to have a 4-day work week (32 hours per week) if all tasks are completed
- Must be available for at least one evening and one weekend shift per month
- Occasional additional evenings and weekends may be required for special events
- Preferred start date: August 11, 2025 (flexible)
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly Rate: $24.04 – $27.03 per hour, commensurate with experience (equivalent to $40,000 – $45,000 annually based on a 32-hour workweek). This is a non-exempt position and is eligible for overtime in accordance with applicable wage and hour laws.

About Milwaukee Diaper Mission
Milwaukee Diaper Mission launched in 2020 as Milwaukee’s first basic needs bank. Our mission is to empower families in need by providing a reliable source of free diapers and period supplies. In collaboration with local social service agencies, we provide free basic essentials to Milwaukee families while raising awareness of the public health crises known as diaper need and period poverty.
