Associate Dean of Students

The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) seeks candidates for a full-time Associate Dean of Students to join our team with an anticipated start date in July 2024.  The Associate Dean of Students leads and manages student academic support programs and student resources and services (i.e.  tutoring, counseling, health/medical disability).  Additionally, the Associate Dean of Students works directly with students, coordinates support with faculty, healthcare providers, and parents as needed.  The Associate Dean of Students also develops programming, policies, and procedures to enhance student retention and works closely with the Dean of Students.

Responsibilities include, but not are limited to:

  1. Support students and provide them with resources to address their academic, personal, emotional, and mental health concerns. Respond to questions and concerns regarding academic procedures, performance standards, conflicts and complaints, and health and wellness issues.
  2. Serve as a student advocate by coordinating communication and appropriate information to faculty/staff to provide student support.
  3. Serve as an Academic Advisor for at-risk students (probation, conditional admits, disabilities)
  4. Lead, motivate, and supervise Student Support Coordinators, Student Accessibility Coordinator, Coordinator of Tutoring Services, and other members of the Student Services team as assigned by the Dean of Students.
  5. Act as a vital member of Early Alert and Behavior Intervention Team; identify and contact students at risk; respond to student emergency situations.
  6. Lead working groups/initiate and develop programming surrounding training/communication for students, faculty, and staff around mental health and accessibility to enhance student support and retention.
  7. Assist Coordinator of Tutoring Services with overseeing Mentor Program and assist in coordinating New Student Orientations for Fall and Spring semesters.
  8. Oversee medical withdrawals, reduce course loads, and student on leave requests. Coordinate communication amongst student, parents, health care providers, faculty, and Dean of Students as needed.
  9. Member of Academic Standards Board (student grade and dismissal appeals); Participate in Student Support Services meetings.
  10. Maintain effective communication & collaborative working relationship with Marquette University Counseling Center and Medical Clinic
  11. Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Students and/or Vice President for Enrollment Management.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Highly effective in all aspects of crisis management, including the ability to work collaboratively with others in managing crises.
  • A high level of collegiality in working with other student affairs units as well as campus and community constituencies along with the ability to build collaborative relationships characterized by mutual respect, trust, and commitment to shared goals. Integrity, creativity, energy, and decisiveness along with the capacity to engage and inspire others.
  • Communicate effectively with students and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a culturally competent professional with broad experience interacting with and supporting the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Sensitive, diplomatic, and highly articulate in written and verbal communications with all constituencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications; experience with Student Information Systems.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education Student Services, Student Affairs, Advising, or Management preferred. Bachelor’s Degree required.  Preference will be given to candidates with training or experience in counseling/mental health/crisis intervention.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in educational program development, personnel management, and experience providing direct service to students.
  • At least two (2) years supervisory experience and collaborations with other departments in higher education to support the goals of the college.
  • Ability and capacity to work some evenings and weekends as needed to accomplish goals.
