DIRECTOR OF SAFETY
The Milwaukee Rescue Mission (MRM) is seeking a Director of Safety. This position leads a dedicated security team and is responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing all safety programs, policies and procedures to ensure the safety and well-being for employees, students, guests and visitors on both campuses. This role requires a highly collaborative leader who can effectively partner across the organization to establish trust in a safety vision, a commitment to fostering a safety-first culture through regular training and emergency preparedness, and the ability to mitigate risks effectively.
WORK SCHEDULE: Full-time, First Shift, Monday-Friday. Occasional evening/weekend hours may be required.
LOCATION:
- Central Campus, 830 N 19th Street, Milwaukee, WI. 53233: Home to our shelters, recovery programs and administrative offices
- North Campus: 1530 W Center Street, Milwaukee, WI. 53206: Home to Cross Trainers Academy, K4-12th grade Christian Academy
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement comprehensive safety programs, policies and systems to protect employees, students, guests, visitors and assets from potential risks and threats
- Establish trusted relationships with leaders and staff on both campuses in the continuing development of an overall safety mindset and culture
- Lead, hire, and train a dedicated security team to foster a culture of collaboration, trust, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Maintain, update, and manage the Emergency Action Plans (EAP)
- Work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team and the Training and Development Manager in leading the Mission through crisis management situations. This includes providing regular training exercises and drills to maintain the highest focus on ensuring our campuses remain safe from potential harms and threats
- Respond to alarms and emergency calls requesting assistance from emergency personnel for high-risk situations
- In partnership with Human Resources, develop, coordinate and/or provide safety related orientation, education and training to all MRM staff based on the identified training needs of each position
- Lead efforts to develop and implement risk assessment methods/system to anticipating, identifying, and evaluating hazards and assure deficiencies are corrected
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of all safety measures through audits, inspections, and incident investigations, implementing corrective actions as needed
- Work collaboratively with Facilities leadership to inspect and evaluate emergency alarm systems, emergency lighting, signage, and power backup systems
- Work collaboratively with IT leadership to inspect and evaluate security camera systems, monitoring stations, metal detectors, and door access systems and train staff as needed on these systems
- Establish and maintain strategic relationships and networks with law enforcement, fire and rescue, government and other community agencies
- Ensure compliance with federal, state and local safety laws, regulations, codes and rules
- Coordinate all reviews of recommendations from outside consultants, vendors, surveyors and inspectors as they relate to safety and code compliance
- Remain current on the latest safety and security regulations, industry trends, best practices and technological advancements and recommend improvements to existing policies and procedures as needed
- Develop and manage the safety budget ensuring resources are allocated effectively and efficiently
- Perform monthly inventory checks for safety and security supplies and equipment
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management, Environmental Health and Safety or related field
- Minimum of 10 years of successful professional leadership experience in:
- Emergency and Safety management
- Developing and delivering training, exercise design, implementation and program development
- Managing and developing safety staff in a large multi-campus setting preferred
- A mature Christian with a servant’s heart who is able to relate well with others in a diverse population
- Excellent leadership qualities, including the ability to effectively collaborate and, build trust with leaders, and staff at all levels of the organization
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a diverse team effectively
- Ability to create and deliver various types of training materials based on organizational need
- Strong understanding of physical security concepts, including perimeter protection, access control, and CCTV surveillance
- Ability to recognize onsite risk factors and take appropriate action with firmness and tact
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, advisory and presentation skills
- Advanced organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple assignments
- Ability to positively influence others to effect change across all levels of the organization
- Must be able to interpret and apply local, state, and federal regulations
- Developed understanding of emergency systems and alarm systems
- Microsoft Office proficiency
- Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record

- Be in agreement with and subscribe to the MRM Statement of Faith and the MRM Statement of Biblical Convictions
- Be a committed follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, which is evident in personal testimony and Christian conduct
