Northwest Side Community Development Corporation (NWSCDC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community development organization located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Since 1983, the organization has supported economic development opportunities in disinvested communities, with particular emphasis on workforce development, land use planning, green infrastructure, business development and commercial lending. As a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), NWSCDC has lent nearly $25 million to small businesses and entrepreneurs in underserved communities. 

Summary of Role, Community Sustainability Manager

Program: Planning & Community Development

Reports to: Executive Director

Location: Milwaukee, WI (On-Site/In-Person)

Status: Full Time, Exempt 

Purpose & Responsibilities of Role

The Community Sustainability Manager successfully works with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) and other partners on green infrastructure outreach, planning, and other community development activities in the 30th Street Corridor. The essential responsibilities and day-to-day interactions of this role, as outlined below, embody NWSCDC’s  principal commitment to planning, environmental sustainability, and cultivating community economic development opportunities:

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with area businesses, churches, schools, daycares, and residents, particularly to support community engagement work for MMSD’s West Basin Stormwater Project;
  • Conducting door-to-door outreach, including administering surveys;
  • Managing ongoing maintenance, programming, and activation of Green Tech Station in conjunction with partners, including by scheduling, coordinating and/or facilitating tours, field trips, volunteer workdays, etc.; 
  • Planning & hosting community events centered on green infrastructure and stormwater management;
  • Developing a vision for community spaces, using community input;
  • Fundraising and writing grants to carry out this vision;
  • Working with community partners on additional neighborhood revitalization activities, including enhancing neighborhood connectivity, advocating for safe and complete streets, shared-use trail developments, and facilitating various neighborhood planning efforts;
  • Assisting with creating flyers, posting on social media, and writing press releases to advertise community events;
  • Maintaining active communication with partners, residents, and stakeholders with project progress updates, event notifications, construction updates, etc., while managing contacts in an online database;
  • Help implement grantee reporting, budget tracking, and compile impact data as required by NWSCDC, banks, funders, and government agencies, etc.; 
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned. 

Abilities & Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in urban planning, urban affairs, environmental science, or a related field (may be substituted with relevant experience);
  • Master’s degree (in the above referenced programs) and/or AICP Certification desired;
  • Two years of community organizing experience in the City of Milwaukee and/or with diverse populations (may be substituted with relevant education);
  • Excellent communication and writing skills;
  • Knowledge of stormwater management and green infrastructure or ability to learn about these quickly;
  • Experience with fundraising and/or grant writing;
  • Ability to work autonomously.

Work Environment

The functions of this role are performed in Milwaukee, WI from the NWSCDC office–4 days in office, 1 day remote. Occasional evening, weekend and outdoor work for special NWSCDC events and projects is expected. Some manual labor and physical activity may be necessary in certain community projects, green infrastructure installations/workshops, etc. Travel relating to conferences and meetings may be presented as an opportunity from time to time.

Salary range for this position is: $64,000 – $75,000.
