Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Strategic Partnerships, the Development Associate will serve as a support to the strategic goals of the Development Team with specific focus around communications and marketing including operational and administrative assistance as needed.

The Development Associate will collaborate with a variety of stakeholders internally and externally to include the Deputy Director, Executive Director, Grant Writer, program staff, donors, various vendors and more.  This role is ideal for communications, marketing professionals with experience serving within non-profit development teams – who like a broad range of responsibilities and enjoy something different every day.

Communications responsibilities include correspondence, newsletters, print and digital media, social media (with program staff) and website management. The role also requires day-to-day management to support development communication, database management and reporting.

This person will also assist with two major fundraising events (golf & annual breakfast) as well as support front reception and operations coverage.


Communications and Public Relations

  1. Develop and maintain communications, public relations, and marketing plans to support strategic goals.
  2. Assist with managing web presence including production and creation of content to support strategic communications.
  3. Perform or manage vendor design, copywriting and production of marketing materials including annual reports, brochures, and promotional pieces.
  1. Manage and produce consistent electronic and printed communications including newsletter, social media and website copywriting, press releases and other relevant updates.
  2. Plan and manage vendor and internal production of audio-visual needs, especially videos for promotion, education, and event support.
  3. Ensure appropriate and professional brand expression, carrying it out throughout the website, print media, press releases, social media and other media. Support external affairs efforts including building and sustaining press and media relations and communicating organization announcements and news.


  1. Assist Deputy Director on support projects as assigned: scheduling donor/development meetings, facilitating donor communications, prepping solicitation packets, filing and coordinating mailings.
  2. Effectively collaborate and communicate with Grants Management firm to engage funders/donors, develop communications, set meetings and work towards overall organization fundraising goals. Assist with grant proposals and solicitation letter writing as needed.
  3. Write donor correspondence on behalf of the Executive Director.
  1. Maintain, refine, and build a mailing list and database of donors and prospects.
  2. Perform donor research and think creatively to identify donor prospects and new funding sources.
  3. In conjunction with Development Committee Chairs, set meeting agenda and logistics including, i.e., room accommodations, refreshments; and meeting packets (agenda, reports, minutes, and printed materials).
  4. Assist event consultant(s) and committees for 2 annual events (Golf & Gala) through database coordination/reporting and assisting Executive Director with communications and correspondence for the events.
  5. Manage teams of volunteers at specific times throughout the year. Develop plan and manage public relations and donor engagement events such as neighborhood tours, “lunch and learns” and receptions to reach new audiences and generate, involve, and thank stakeholders.

General Duties

  1. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Deputy Director.
  2. Provide front desk reception general duties on a routine basis.


  • Applicant must reside in the City of Milwaukee
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred but not required will consider commensurate experience
  • 2-5 years of experience in or working with non-profits in a communication, marketing and/or development capacity
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, accurate, and precise
  • Collegial, team-oriented working style with a willingness to share in both strategic thinking and administrative tasks.
  • Strong writer with demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communications.
  • Experience using Mailchimp, Canva, Instagram and Facebook for promotional purposes preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Must be able to efficiently manage multiple tasks, work well under deadlines.
  • Highly motivated, resourceful, flexible, outgoing, and open‐minded, easily able to adapt to change.
  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • A valid Wisconsin driver’s license and daily access to an insured car

Part time.

20-25 hours per week.
