Summer Camp Teacher – Seasonal | Summer 2025

Schlitz Audubon Nature Center is seeking enthusiastic, nature-loving educators to join our team as Summer Camp Teachers! Our nature-based camps serve school-aged children and offer hands-on outdoor experiences that inspire curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of the natural world.

About the Program

Our summer camps immerse campers in the wonders of our 185-acre sanctuary along Lake Michigan. Camp activities include:

  • Ponding and freshwater exploration
  • Visits to Lake Michigan
  • Encounters with our live Animal Ambassadors
  • Outdoor crafts, games, hikes, and nature discovery
  • And so much more!

Position Overview

The Summer Camp Teacher will work alongside year-round education staff to lead engaging, memorable camp sessions. Depending on experience and comfort level, this role may include serving as the lead teacher for select camp sessions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or co-lead daily camp activities for school-aged campers
  • Create a fun, inclusive, and safe learning environment
  • Guide campers through hands-on nature experiences
  • Support set-up, clean-up, behavior management, and group transitions
  • Collaborate closely with education staff and interns

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in natural science or education field
  • Experience teaching in a formal or informal education setting
  • Passion for environmental education and working with children
  • Strong communication and group-management skills
  • Comfort teaching outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm
  • Prior experience with camps is a plus
  • Current First Aid/ CPR/AED certification from an accredited institution

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on challenging terrain
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, and carry loads
  • Ability to participate in moderate physical activity such as hiking, playing outdoor games and limited lifting (under 40 pounds)

HOURS & DURATION

Employment will last nine (9) weeks with an expected schedule of 25-35 hours per/week.  All programs take place at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. Training is provided during the week prior to camp (June 9).

The 2025 summer camp program runs from June 15, 2026, through August 14, 2026.

There are no camps during the week of June 29-July 3.
