Director of Finance

Our Organization 

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Milwaukee is an organization dedicated to the elimination of poverty and hunger in our community.  Through Our Neighbors Helping Neighbors program, our network of over 600 volunteers provide food, clothing and furniture to those in need in Milwaukee County.   We also operate two free meal programs which serve hot, nutritious meals six nights per week and three thrift stores to generate program revenue to support our programs.   

Position Overview

The Director of Finance will manage the financial and accounting activities, and internal controls for St. Vincent de Paul Society of Milwaukee.  Responsible for daily financial and accounting operations, including the audit, reporting, and analysis.  The Director of Finance will collaborate closely with the Executive Director.

 Accounting Responsibilities 

• Manage daily accounting activities.  Responsible for accounting entries in the general ledger and reporting systems, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, investments, fixed assets, purchasing, journal entries, grants, and vendor payments.
• Supervise and mentor the Accounting and HR Assistant.
• Establish and monitor Internal Controls. 
• Prepare all required documents for annual audit.
• Manage banking activities and reconciliations.

Finance and Investment Responsibilities

• Produce accurate financial statements and reports for use in both internal and external compliance and reporting, including for management, committee, and board meetings.
• Work with Finance Committee and Investment Manager to manage cash flows and ensure compliance with Society’s Investment Policy.
• Collaborate with managers to develop annual budgets. Track and report on the annual operating and programmatic budgets.
• Ensure appropriate gift entry, management, and reporting in partnership with the Director of Development.
• Assist in the execution and implementation of technology to streamline processes.

 Human Resources Responsibilities

• Serves as the primary backup for Human Resources Director. 

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or Business Administration. Five 5 years of non-profit accounting experience.
• A minimum of two years in a finance leadership role. Ability to process and protect confidential information in a professional manner.
• Excellent verbal and communication skills to effectively engage with all stakeholders.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and SharePoint.
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment with minimal supervision. 
• Must be able to get Safeguard certified and pass a criminal background check.

Work Environment

• This position is remote but does require in person meeting attendance on a regular basis. 

Salary will be commensurate with experience.
