Organization Overview: 

The Burke Foundation was founded by the late Richard “Dick” Burke who also founded Trek Bicycles.  He had a vision of improving the city of Milwaukee by using his philanthropy to impact the lives of the city’s young people.  This vision continues into the current day and beyond through the Foundation’s support of high-quality schools, programs, and projects that range from early childhood programs to graduate school fellowships.

The Opportunity:

The Burke Foundation is looking for a dedicated, detail-oriented professional who wants to help make a positive difference in the lives of Milwaukee’s young people.  The Grants and Operations Associate is a full-time position that would be a long-term part of a two-person staff team and work directly alongside the Executive Director.  This position would perform primarily internal-facing duties that are critical to the organization’s mission.  It is anticipated that initial interviews will take place in late August with a start date of early – mid October 2024.

Candidate Experience & Core Competencies:

An ideal candidate for the Grants and Operations Associate position would have the following skills and characteristics:

  • An Associate’s degree, or higher, in a relevant field of study
  • The ability to build and sustain positive professional relationships with grantees, vendors, and other community groups
  • Experience working in administrative roles and/or Milwaukee’s nonprofit, education, or public sectors
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, Zoom, and MacOS platforms
  • Ability to read and interpret financial statements such as form 990’s, budgets, and balance sheets
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with copy-editing skills being a particularly important trait
  • An ability to excel in an independent work environment, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines without direct oversight
  • Discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality

Position Description:

The Grants and Operations Associate is a full-time 40/hour per week role.  While there may be flexibility with remote work, it is expected that the candidate will maintain a physical presence in the office on a consistent and mutually agreed upon schedule.

The following details the primary time allocation and duties of the role.  However, seasonality may affect the exact allocation of tasks and responsibilities.

60% – Foundation operations

  • Ensure timely grant payments.
  • Manage grant payment tracking and documentation
  • Assist in the drafting and preparation of Board of Director meeting materials
  • Attend Board meetings and record the minutes
  • Prepare and send post award grantee materials
  • Provide support to events hosted by the foundation
  • Manage bill payments and vendor relationships
  • Schedule and coordinate foundation meetings
  • Reconcile and track monthly credit card statement
  • Manage foundation records

20% – Impact tracking and storytelling

  • Research, track, and analyze past and current grantmaking impact
  • Assist in the visualization and communication of foundation’s impact

10% – Grantmaking

  • Receive, compile, and track funding requests
  • Ensure all grantee materials are submitted
  • Assist in proposal review and due diligence process

10% – Community relationship building

  • Attend select foundation grantee and community group meetings or site visits
  • Take notes and provide foundation follow up after meetings

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for the position is $50,000-60,000/year depending on experience.  The Burke Foundation offers a stipend to help cover health insurance costs, up to 5% IRA matching contributions, 12 paid holidays, a generous vacation policy, and a flexible mission driven working environment.
