Purpose of Position:

Tikkun Ha-Ir of Milwaukee (THI) seeks a Part-time Food Justice Director to oversee the year-round development and execution of its food justice elements, including the Veggie Chop Shop and gleaning program to collect produce. THI’s Veggie Chop Shop is a community meal program that utilizes gleaned and donated produce to create healthy meals for those experiencing food insecurity or seeking social services. Since 2015, the Veggie Chop Shop distributes approx. 500 meals on a weekly basis to up to 10 area meal sites. To support Veggie Chop Shop and other pantries, Tikkun Ha-Ir engages volunteers to glean donated produce from farmers markets around the greater Milwaukee area.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Development: 40%

During the off season from November- April, the Food Justice Director will focus on developing a broad plan for continued growth. They will work closely with key partners, stakeholders and volunteers to develop the avenues for gleaning and delivering meals. They will build relationships with markets, food stores, and other potential food donors and recipient organizations, and be an active part of the Glean MKE network and Milwaukee Food Council. They will create robust program plans to ensure all logistics are in place. They will also connect with the community on education topics relating to food insecurity, gleaning, and environmental issues.

Fundraising and Data Tracking: 10%

The Food Justice Director is responsible for writing grants related to food justice work, with the support of the Executive Director. They will review past years data, analyze it and create reports that can be used for sharing with key stakeholders.

Program Implementation and Supervision: 50%

The Food Justice Director will lead and manage the Food Justice intern and seasonal staff including a kitchen manager and kitchen assistants. They will work alongside the kitchen manager as a key staff person at the kitchen. They will ensure that the correct food is collected and that the meals and produce are delivered to the appropriate locations. As the Food Justice Director, the  position requires regularly participating at the kitchen during the Veggie Chop Shop season and managing the logistics of the Veggie Chop Shop. They will create, update and maintain data tracking and systems for evaluation and feedback.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong organization, communication and time management skills
  • Excellent attention to detail 
  • Self-motivated, disciplined and committed to being both part of a team and leading a team
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with farmers markets, social service organizations, food businesses, and volunteers 
  • Excellent written and oral communication and computer skills, including ability to use Word and Excel 
  • Positive attitude, patience, creativity and a great sense of humor 
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and comfort working with all ages and diverse communities
  • Knowledge of food systems and gleaning; connection with Milwaukee-area food-related organizations a plus
  • Able to do physical labor, lift up to 30 lbs
  • Valid Drivers License to support gleaning and delivering

Compensation: $22/hour for up to 20 hours a week
