Job Title: Donor Communications and Events Manager

Reports To: Director of Donor Relations

Status: Exempt, full time

Work Location: Hybrid In-Person/Remote (2 days/week in office, minimum)

Role Summary:  As the Donor Communications and Events Manager, you are responsible for building strong, meaningful, and successful fundraising campaigns at the Urban Ecology Center.  You will focus on designing and implementing comprehensive donor communication and event strategies aimed at cultivating existing and prospective individual donors and work as part of a team of fundraisers to achieve stated revenue goals.

Primary Responsibilities

As the Donor Communications and Events Manager, your priorities are to grow individual giving through annual appeals, engaging donor events, and the sustaining giver program (the Hive). You will cultivate, engage, and steward the Center’s diverse donor community and prospect pool.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and manage the annual fundraising campaign calendar to ensure strategic plans and critical processes are effectively carried out in a timely manner.
  • Manage annual appeal campaigns including drafting compelling print and online solicitations, creating appeal lists, and coordinating mailings.
  • Manage online fundraising campaigns (email and social media)
  • Work closely with the Marketing Department to ensure general marketing and communications copy (emails, website, printed materials, signs, etc) consider donors and prospective donors as an audience.
  • Write compelling copy for ongoing donor stewardship communications such as the creation of the annual report, News From the Naturehood publication, and ongoing touchpoints communicating the impact of fundraising campaigns.
  • Manage the UEC monthly giving program, The Hive, including benefits, communications, data management, and growth of the givingbase.
  • Lead the planning and coordination of the UEC’s fundraising events, which currently includes the annual Summer Solstice Soiree.
  • Work with the Director of Donor Relations on the execution of donor stewardship events that advance donor involvement, cultivation, and stewardship.
  • Work with the Development Systems Manager to segment targeted recipient lists and compile reports on development campaigns.
  • Oversee fundraising elements of UEC community events (including the creation of web pages to optimize donations).
  • Collaborate with the Marketing department to manage the donor experience through website and print materials; make adjustments as needed to ensure donors have a positive giving experience.
  • Assist with capital campaign efforts as required.
  • Participate in various board and committee meetings as requested.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT

  • All team members of the Urban Ecology Center work a minimum of 1-2 weekend or evening events each year. Our events are a great way to engage with our communities and see our mission in action; examples include Urban Candlelight Hike, Autumn Celebration, and HKE MKE. Some roles may have increased responsibility for event leadership.
  • All team members are asked to support our building hours by providing building coverage, which may include opening/closing the building, communicating with staff on-site, and welcoming visitors or guests.

Staff Experience

  • We nurture an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative workplace culture. Many of our staff serve on cross-departmental committees for internal and external events, employee engagement, our equity, dignity, and justice (EDJ) focus, and safety initiatives, to name a few.
  • We host a 2-day all-staff retreat each fall, with quarterly all-staff meetings, regular department meetings, and ongoing communication in between. We make frequent use of Slack and utilize the Google platform for email and cloud computing.
  • UEC staff work on-site a minimum of twice per week at one of our 3 branches, though many choose to work in-person more frequently. Several of our roles do not have remote capabilities by the nature of their responsibilities.
  • UEC staff can attend all programs and events at a low or no cost. Children of staff members attend programming, including summer camps, at reduced rates.
  • The starting compensation range is expected to be $48,500-$52,500.

Team and Supervision

  • As a member of the Development team, you will be managed by the Director of Donor Relations..
  • Though all of our teams work together in some capacity, you will most frequently collaborate with the Marketing and Communications, and Neighborhood Engagement teams.
  • All UEC team members should expect interaction with volunteers, members, and youth participants; as a member of the Development team, you can expect regular interaction with donors and key stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

Skills and Abilities

  • You have a working knowledge and understanding of fund development, marketing, and communications.
  • You are very skilled at writing appeal letters, running online solicitation campaigns, and planning events.
  • You are able to demonstrate the ability to present UEC to the donor community in meetings, at events, and on the phone, in a gracious, engaging, and professional manner.
  • You have strong attention to detail, are self-motivated, and are able to multitask. Problem-solving and building systemic efficiencies are your strengths.
  • You build trust and exercise good judgment by meeting deadlines, delivering on commitments, prioritizing needs, making considered and effective decisions, and forming conclusions.
  • Collaboration is a key element to success in this role; you are able to lead groups through strategic planning processes to form recommendations and conclusions.
  • Well-developed computer skills, including experience with donor databases such as Altru (Blackbaud) or others.
  • Experience in online fundraising platforms such as Mailchimp, Qgiv, and online auction software.
  • Strong cultural competency and commitment to equity, dignity, and justice are required.
  • Affinity with the overall mission of the Urban Ecology Center.
  • An affinity with the overall mission of the Urban Ecology Center is highly recommended.
  • High ethical standards and commitment to confidentiality are required.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

  • A minimum of 4 years of direct development or transferable experience is required.
  • Experience creating online and print fundraising materials is required.
  • Experience in relationship development and communicating directly with donors is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years in event planning and management experience is required.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field is highly preferred; additional training and certification is recommended.

Working Conditions, Location, and Schedule

  • Condition & Location: Open office workspace with an active team atmosphere. Using shared workspaces at all three UEC locations.
  • Physical Requirements: Sitting for prolonged periods, typing on a computer keyboard, lifting objects of 25 pounds or less
  • Equipment Used: Computer equipment, fundraising software, Google software
  • Schedule: Standard business hours with occasional evening and weekend events
