The Food Security VISTA will address food security among students at UW-Parkside and in the surrounding community by evaluating current program effectiveness, building partnerships volunteer support, generating resources, and devising inclusive outreach strategies for under-served community members. This will be implemented at the University and local Shalom Center Food Pantry in Kenosha, Wisconsin.


  • Conduct research and train staff to evaluate equity and success of the Shalom Center food programs, as well as the satisfaction of food program clients by collecting and analyzing data and feedback from clients and partners.
  • Prepare a report and presentation of research and recommendations for stakeholders.
  • Design and implement a culturally appropriate and targeted plan to increase awareness of Shalom Center and other food resources in the Kenosha Community, including low-income Parkside students
  • Develop a strategy/plan (with stakeholders) to provide greater access to emergency food for UW-Parkside students and identify resources to support it. (possibly a campus food pantry)
  • Cultivate partnerships to access and promote food security resources (federal, state and local resources) for UW-Parkside students and recruit student volunteers to sustain this effort.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent writing, public speaking and digital media skills
  • Research and/or program evaluation skills—survey question development, interviewing, secondary source research
  • Collaboration and partnership development experience
  • Ability to coordinate and align several tasks at one time
  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently
  • Marketing and communication skills
  • Experience working with diverse populations and those facing deep-poverty
  • Ability to speak/write in Spanish

Stipend and Benefits Provided by AmeriCorps and Campus Compact

  • Bi-weekly living allowance of $575.40
  • End of service award* (AmeriCorps member must choose one of two options)
