The Lead Bike & Walk Instructor is a seasonal employee working 20-40 hours/week depending on personal availability and season. The primary responsibility of this position is to lead a team of Safe Routes to School Instructors and provide bicycle and pedestrian safety programs for youth and teens in Milwaukee Public Schools and at other community sites. Lead Safe Routes Instructors typically work between the hours of 8 AM – 5 PM, Monday-Friday, with occasional opportunities to work special events on evenings and weekends. This person will help lead an amazing team of Safe Routes Instructors and work alongside Milwaukee Youth & Teen Program Managers. In 2025 our team worked with over 1400 youth in Milwaukee and taught over 200 students to ride a bike!
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and assist instruction of our Walking Wisdom & Bicycle Driver’s Ed programs as well as facilitating safe bicycle rides for Summer Camps, working with students in K-12th grade.
- Work cooperatively with MPS teachers and Bike Fed staff to address student needs.
- Provide a safe and welcoming atmosphere for youth to learn & facilitate conversation.
- Conduct assessments of streets for hazards and impediments to walking and biking.
- Help our bike mechanic maintain a fleet of bicycles.
- Create and collaborate with the SRTS team on photography, writing, and video to encourage and support biking in MPS.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Required
- Experience working with children, developing and implementing lesson plans.
- Excellent speaking and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a strong team.
- Multi-modal transportation habits.
- Driver’s License and ability to drive a 10’-26’ moving truck.

Advanced Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- League of American Cyclists Instructor Certification (beneficial, but not required)
- Knowledge of Complete Streets Policy (beneficial, but not required)
- First Aid, CPR and Lifeguard Certification. (beneficial, but not required)
- Spanish or Arabic Fluency. (beneficial, but not required)
- Bicycle maintenance/mechanic skills. ( beneficial, but not required)
- Social Media/Computer graphic skills. (beneficial, but not required)
Job Conditions/Work Location:
- Most time spent outside teaching at schools and riding bicycles in the street.
- Significant time spent in classroom settings working with diverse groups of children and teaching professionals.
- Sites are located throughout Milwaukee County and sites may rotate weekly.
- Flexible Office Hours and meetings in Bay View at Bike Fed HQ.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to ride a bicycle 10-30 miles/day.
- Lift and move bicycles, boxes of helmets, and other equipment between school sites. 25+ lbs
- For those who are unable to meet physical requirements, part-time employment is possible during the school year. People who ride adaptive bicycles are encouraged to apply.
