A Summer Bike Camp Instructor is a seasonal employee working 20-40 hours/week depending on availability and program need.  The primary responsibility of this position is to facilitate Bike Camps in Milwaukee Public Schools and at other community sites.  Working with a team of fellow instructors this position will  both teach children to ride a bike for the first time as well as lead bike rides across Milwaukee!

This position typically works between the hours of 8 AM – 5 PM, Monday-Friday, with occasional opportunities to work special Bike Fed events on evenings and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identifying routes to destinations across Milwaukee County  and leading safe bicycle rides.
  • Work cooperatively to address student needs.
  • Provide a safe and welcoming atmosphere for youth to learn.
  • Conduct assessments of streets for hazards and impediments to walking and biking.
  • Help maintain a fleet of bicycles.
  • Assist with other projects and tasks as needed.
  • Must pass a background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Required

  • Experience working with children.
  • Excellent speaking and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a strong team.
  • Multi-modal transportation habits.

Summer Bike Camp Instructor: Safe Routes to School

Advanced Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • League of American Cyclists Instructor Certification (beneficial, but not required)
  • First Aid, CPR and Lifeguard Certification. (beneficial, but not required)
  • Bilingual and ESL support (beneficial, but not required)
  • Bicycle maintenance/mechanic skills. ( beneficial, but not required)
  • Social Media/Computer graphic skills. (beneficial, but not required)

Job Conditions/Work Location:

  • Most time spent outside teaching at schools and riding bicycles in the street.
  • Significant time spent in classroom settings working with diverse groups of children and teaching professionals.
  • Sites are located throughout Milwaukee County and sites may rotate weekly.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to ride a bicycle 10-30  miles/day.
  • Lift and move bicycles, boxes of helmets, and other equipment between school sites.  25+ lbs
  • For those who are unable to meet physical requirements, part-time employment may be possible during the school year.
