How you’ll impact our mission:
The Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is hiring full-time, seasonal wildlife rehabilitation interns to care for wildlife with the goal of being released back into the wild. The wildlife rehabilitation intern reports to the Director of Wildlife Rehabilitation and the Intern Coordinator at the Milwaukee Campus, where the position is an onsite, on the job learning opportunity. A limited number of paid internship positions are available with start dates beginning between April 1-June1, and end dates between mid-August to October, depending on candidate’s availability. Candidates will be accepted for a minimum of twelve weeks, but a longer stay is encouraged. Key accountabilities
- Limiting stress in captive wild animals
- Facility sanitation and animal food hygiene
- Zoonotic disease transmission prevention
- Formula selection and feeding techniques for orphaned mammals and birds
- Maintaining accurate animal care records
- Medicating animals by various routes and basic fluid therapy techniques
- General release criteria for rehabilitated wildlife
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Available on evenings, weekends and holidays and to work at least 40 hours average per week, working at least 8-hour shifts.
- Completed or pursuing undergraduate or graduate coursework in biology, wildlife management or ecology, natural sciences, pre-veterinary, or related fields preferred.
- Candidates must be up to date on their tetanus vaccinations.
- Available for the entire 12-week minimum internship period. Due to the seasonal workload, vacation requests cannot always be approved.
- Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork, attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to work successfully in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated alignment with our mission, people-centered philosophy, and organizational values of compassion, respect, and kindness; innovation; professionalism; equity; and positive approach.
- Ability to navigate emotional aspects of animal welfare work.
- Able to successfully meet the physical demands of the job, which include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Must be able to routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds and able to work indoors and outdoors in most weather conditions.
