Position Summary

We are seeking a compassionate, strategic, and collaborative professional to lead our intake, pet retention, and adoption efforts. This role is critical in ensuring positive outcomes for animals and the people who care for them by guiding intake processes, supporting adopters, and connecting the community with vital resources.

This position works cross-functionally with kennel, behavior, veterinary, and training teams to ensure capacity for care while promoting innovative solutions that keep pets in homes whenever possible.

Essential Functions:

Intake, Pet Retention & Adoptions

  • Lead the intake process by establishing procedures and coaching the adoption team on best practices and difficult conversations.
  • Collaborate with kennel, behavior, veterinary, and training teams to assess intake pathways and capacity for care.
  • Coordinate pet retention and intake diversion initiatives, including connections to:
    • Behavioral training and consultation
    • Veterinary resources
    • Pet Pantry Support
  • Partner with adoption leads to guide staff on available support pathways.
  • Serve as an adoption counselor by:
    • Assisting potential adopters
    • Providing detailed information on animals and their care needs
    • Completing adoption paperwork accurately and efficiently
  • Promote a positive public image through professional, timely, and courteous communication.
  • Model and coach exceptional customer service and assist staff with challenging interactions.

Community Engagement

  • Assess community needs and build relationships with external support resources.
  • Participate in outreach efforts to expand access to services and strengthen community partnerships.

Community Support Services

  • Oversee Pet Pantry operations, including vendor and partner relationships.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement, municipalities, and other agencies regarding animals in legal custody.
  • Identify and implement resources to support pet reunification.
  • Support emergency pet boarding programs and pet retention initiatives.
  • Assist in coordinating response efforts for community emergencies impacting pets and their owners.

General Duties

  • Maintain supplies and equipment for daily operations.
  • Support staff training and development in collaboration with the training coordinator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, animal behavior, management, or related field and/or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Strong animal handling skills and comfort working with animals of varying temperaments.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to navigate difficult conversations.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and reliability.
  • Strong organizational and strategic thinking skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and events as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a background check.

Working Conditions

  • Work is primarily indoors with occasional outdoor responsibilities.
  • Exposure to animal dander, odors, and potential zoonotic diseases.
  • Fast-paced, noisy environment with potentially stressful situations.
  • May include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Physical & Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, sit, bend, stoop, and move for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in loud environments with strong odors.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage stress and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Emotional intelligence and ability to navigate sensitive situations.
